Two people were killed after falling through ice on Island Lake in Kalkaska Township on Friday, Dec. 6, the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release.
The victims included 22-year-old Johnathan Brake, of Kalkaska, and a 13-year-old who was not identified by police. A 14-year-old boy, whose name was not released, and who also fell through the ice shortly before 11 p.m., Friday escaped from the water and was transported to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center where he was treated and released, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies were dispatched to Island Lake Road and Dockery Road at about 10:56 p.m. Friday in response to a person yelling for help on the lake.
When first responders arrived, they discovered that three people — a 22-year-old male, a 14-year-old male and a 13-year-old male — all had fallen through the ice on Island Lake, about 26 miles from Traverse City.
Sheriff’s deputies rescued the 14-year-old, who crawled from the broken ice to yell for help.
“He was heard by Jonathan Brakes girl-friend who had gone looking for the three,” the release said.
Brake was pulled from the water around 11:40 p.m. and officers attempted life saving measures, the release said. Brake was later transported via ambulance to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The 13-year-old was not located until the morning of Dec. 8, officials said. Officials searched through the night and Michigan State Police helicopters combed the shoreline and open water, the release said.
The Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Dive Team located the boy’s body at about 9:50 a.m. Monday morning in 7-8 feet of water, officials said.
The Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office, Kalkaska EMS, Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Emergency Dive Team, Kalkaska County Station 7, 5, 4 and 9 Fire and Rescue Departments, Whitewater and South Torch Lake Fire and Rescue, Michigan State Police, Michigan State police Trooper 3 Helicopter were all involved in the effort.
