Spotted Lanternfly Trap-building Workshop – Goodells County Park – April 29, 6-8pm

Join the Lake St. Clair Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) and St. Clair County Parks staff to create your own Spotted Lanternfly trap! What on Earth is a Spotted Lanternfly and why would you want to trap it? Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive insect newly detected in Michigan and spreading closer to St. Clair County. SLF feeds on 75+ species of fruit, shade, and ornamental trees and plants. Learn about SLF’s life cycle, impacts and how to report, prevent and monitor for it as well as control strategies. You will build your own “circle trap” as part of this workshop and will receive instructions on how to use it. Become an early detector in your neighborhood or favorite park or pass your trap along to someone else. All materials and instructions will be provided at this free event. Amanda Ruffini, Lake St. Clair CISMA Director said, “Spotted Lanternfly was recently detected in Macomb County, and we are very interested in developing a community of early detectors to help us monitor this emerging issue and respond accordingly.”

Continuing education opportunities: Two MDARD pesticide applicator recertification credits are available for this workshop in categories 1C, 2, 3B, Comm. CORE or Priv. CORE. Extension Master Gardeners will earn two education hours for this workshop and volunteer hours are also available to those who assist with monitoring and public education. Master Gardener hours should be reported under the “St. Clair County Parks” project. The Lake St. Clair CISMA is funded by the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program (Michigan.gov/Invasives). The Lake St. Clair CISMA serves Macomb and St. Clair Counties.

All are welcome at this free and family-friendly event. Pre-registration is required and spaces are limited. The workshop will be held at the Community Center at Goodells County Park, 8345 County Park Dr., Goodells MI 48027. Free parking and restrooms are available at the Community Center. Clothing and gloves that can get dirty are suggested. For more information and to register, contact Kirsten Lyons, klyons@stclaircounty.org, (810) 989-6317.
