King Frosty and his minions proved a fun and exciting winter distraction in Algonac over the last few months. City officials were pleased to announce the success of their first ever Snowman Decorating Contest.

The owner of Colony Insulation, Danny Walker, designed and created the army of snowmen that were sold and then decorated by local groups before being put on display at Riverfront Park

The event was hosted by the local non-profit group, Algonac Alive, and sponsored by the local business, Colony Insulation.

The Piece to Peace Quilters, who’s snowperson was #16 for voting purposes, was among the top three vote getters for the recent contest.

The contest was announced in January and Colony Insulation agreed to build the snowmen in their shop, making one big snowman and 20 smaller ones. The public were invited to purchase a snowman for $60 and then decorate it to promote their business or non-profit.

Girl Scout Troop #76974 created a snowperson complete with boxes of cookies.

Voting took place online via email from Feb. 1 to Feb. 28, with each snowman numbered and people asked to vote for their favorite creation.

At last night’s March 3 meeting of the Algonac City Council Mayor Rocky Gillis announced that the contest raised $1,600 for the Algonac Activity Center and the city already utilized the funds to buy 200 chairs for the center

Members of the Piece to Peace Quilters in Algonac created a lovely lady snowman for the competition.

“Big shout out to Danny Walker at Colony Insulation it was his idea and he built every one of those snowmen and to Dwayne Hrynyk who did a lot of running around for this,” Gillis said, before announcing the winners of the contest.

Gillis noted that 782 votes were cast with 20 snowmen to choose from and the following trio took top honors.

The top three vote getters were

  • Algonac Girl Scout Troop #76974
  • Algonac Varsity Cheerleaders
  • The Peace to Piece Quilters

The Algonac High School Cheerleaders had their creation land in the top three with voters during the recent snowman contest.

Members of the Girl Scout Troop and the Quilters Group were in attendance at the council meeting and posed for photos with the board. Gillis noted that the high school cheerleaders couldn’t be in attendance at they were practicing for an upcoming competition.

This was the special custom made lighted trophy awarded to the top three vote getters in the recent Snowman Decorating Contest in Algonac.

“The adventures of Suzie Sew. Suzie Sew is so humbled and thankful for all your votes,” Jan Evans, with Piece to Peace Quilters wrote on Facebook after the contest. “She is now heading back to the Algonac Activity sewing studio, sew much more work to be done sewing for others.”

When the contest was introduced in January, Algonac Alive member Hrynyk explained that the $60 charge was basically for the cost of the materials. Those materials consisted of a trio of beach balls – two 24-inch beach balls and a 12-inch beach ball – with foam sprayed over the top. Each entry was given back to the creators after the contest.
