New year, new programs at the Port Huron Recreation Department

Port Huron Parks & Recreation is starting the new year with a brand new “Oldies Get Goodies” program. The department, which often offers youth programs, felt the need to reach out to those who remain kids at heart.

“The pandemic has impacted everyone, but especially seniors since they are at higher risk,” said
Melanie Chandler, Port Huron Recreation Department co-supervisor. “We hope to relieve their isolation
by safely socializing outdoors with them for a few minutes and giving them something fun to do when we leave,” she said.

This program will deliver crafts and games to seniors’ homes every week for four weeks. Seniors
and their families can sign up by calling (810) 984-9760 or emailing phrec@porthuron.org. Distribution is expected to start near the end of January.

In addition, families in the area can socialize safely with a free and fun game of bingo. Due to a
successful trial run, the department will continue to host ‘Parking Lot Bingo’ south of McMorran Place on Tuesdays from Jan. 19 through Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m.

The event attracted about 75 cars and 200 people who spent 45 minutes playing multiple games
from the comfort of their vehicles last month.

With a little help from ‘Mother Nature,’ the department also hopes to carry on safe socialization
options by building two outdoor ice rinks, one on the southeast side of Palmer Park and the other on the west end of Lincoln Park. “We haven’t had much luck in the past years because of weather fluctuation, but we are hoping that this year is a bit different,” said Chandler.

Virtual and hybrid programs will continue throughout the winter season. Families can participate
in fun challenges through photo contests and scavenger hunts or even get creative by following a weekly arts & crafts class on Thursdays on the department’s Facebook page.
