Dedicated Department of Veterans Affairs Director
PORT HURON, MICHIGAN July 2, 2019 — Chris W. Smith has been the director of the St. Clair County Department of Veterans Affairs for four years devoted to managing all veteran-related programs. In addition, his partnerships with local, state, and national organizations have placed the Department center stage.
Smith, serving in the Marine Corps Reserve for over 25 years, served in three combat tours (Afghanistan, Horn of Africa, and Iraq), and served on active duty for four years as the District Inquired Support Coordinator assisted Wounded/Ill and Inquired Marines and Navy Corpsman in Michigan and Indiana. He is currently, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Walsh® a leading, all-business college and one of Michigan’s largest business schools.
He has been selected as vice-president from 2018 to present of the Michigan Association of County Veterans Counselors (MACVC). This organization has 140 accredited county veterans service officer (VSO) members across the State of Michigan. The MACVC assists veterans and their families in obtaining any and all county, state, and federal benefits to which they are entitled. Their goal is to codify all existing laws into one viable law.
Smith was elected in 2017 to current as an executive board member of the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO). This organization includes over 1,900 county VSO members across 36-states and territories. NACVSO is a leader in training and educating county veterans service officers and veterans advocates in the preparation, submission, and representation of claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). They have also become an influential and respected voice on legislation and VA policy changes impacting veterans and their families.
He was appointed in 2015 to present-day to the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers Washington, DC Liaison Committee. They support developing VA policies and procedures with local VSO involvement on legislation related to veterans.
“I am honored to hold the leadership position for the St. Clair County Department of Veterans Affairs and have the opportunity to serve in other capacities to keep our pulse on current and emerging statuses of veterans benefits, claims processes and procedures, legislations, and veterans affairs policies,” Chris W. Smith said. “I look forward to my continued service locally, state-wide, and on a national scale for years to come.”
Smith’s efforts are fully supported by his knowledgeable and dedicated accredited county veterans service officers, and professional office staff. “All of us are the backbone of the department in reducing the veteran’s frustration and confusion of navigating the VA process,” Candice Ericksen, Senior County Veterans Service Officer said. “We’re all proud to be serving St. Clair County veterans and their families.

Nancy Deising has been a public servant for county government for over the past 23 years. She currently works for the County of St. Clair as the Outreach Coordinator for St. Clair County Department of Veterans Affairs. She received her bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University in Health Education and is a Certified Health Education Specialist.
