Valentine’s-themed event highlights animal duos
WHAT: Romantic duos from penguins to polar bears will be featured in a Valentine’s-themed event called Heart Fest, highlighting animals at the Detroit Zoo who “heart” one another.
WHEN: Thursday, February 7, and Saturday, February 9
Noon – penguins
12:30 p.m. – red pandas
1 p.m. – wolverines
1:30 p.m. – polar bears
2 p.m. – wolves
WHERE: Detroit Zoo (Please check in at the Administration Gate – fifth entrance west of Woodward – for a media escort.)
BACKGROUND: The animals will receive special treats as part of a comprehensive daily program that ensures their habitats are ever changing and appropriately complex. These include treat-filled piñatas, heart-shaped ice treats and painted rocks. When a male penguin finds the female he wishes to waddle through life with, he embarks on a search for a suitable stone to give her as a gift. Once he picks the perfect pebble, he places it at her feet, declaring his desire to mate. If the female accepts this “pebble proposal”, the rock will be one of many used to build their nest.
