Marysville defeats PHN volleyball on Senior Night

By Joseph Hayes

It was a match-up between two of the top volleyball programs in the Blue Water Area.

It just happened to take on even more importance this night, as the contest celebrated the senior athletes on Marysville’s roster with Senior Night.

As Marysville hosted the Port Huron Northern volleyball team on Tuesday, the Vikings senior class was the focal point; as six players and the team’s student manager were celebrated.

It would just so happen the Vikings would have plenty to cheer for, as they defeated the Huskies, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-12.

Each game would feature several runs.

The Vikings (6-3 MAC White, 12-8 overall) got off to a slow start in Game 1 but would do more than enough to recover before it would conclude.

Northern held an initial 2-0 lead before Marysville would start to respond with a couple runs of its own.

Marysville would run off four straight points to take the lead and would continue to record runs as the teams jockeyed back and forth for position.

By the end of the game, the Vikings had made enough plays to stay ahead for the 25-22 win.

Game 2 would be similar, with the teams playing back and forth looking to gain control.

Port Huron Northern led 13-9 after scoring five straight. But Marysville would respond with its own run.

Marysville came back to tie it at 15 and then took the lead for good going forward at 16-15.

It would grow all of the way to 23-19 before Northern responded and forced the game into extra points before Marysville won, 26-24.

The teams would also jockey for position at the start of the third game until the Vikings took control midway and held off the Huskies.

Jessica Miller had two aces, three blocks, 15 kills and 15 digs to pace Marysville.

Natalie Husson added two blocks, three aces and eight kills for the Vikings and Ashley Roeske had 31 digs, three kills and two aces.

Kirsten Smith added 19 digs and three kills for Marysville, while Brett Wrubel had 37 assists and five kills and Alyssa Morgan had 19 digs for the Vikings.

District play begins next week.
