When Dorothy Gale is swept away by a tornado from her Kansas farm to the magical Land of Oz, she encounters many whimsical characters – good witches, bad witches, animals that talk, and scarecrows that walk. This delightful adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s beloved tale brings all the most recognizable songs and moments from the 1939 film to life onstage including “Over the Rainbow,” “Munchkinland (Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead),” “If I Only Had a Brain,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard (Follow the Yellow Brick Road),” and “The Merry Old Land of Oz.”
Mirabella Zeigler stars in the role of Dorthy Gale alongside real life brothers Matthew and John Drinkwater who will appear as the Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion respectively. ThumbCoast regular, Jacob Stoliker takes on the trusted Tinman and Samantha VanCamp showcases her cackle as the Wicked Witch of the West. Making their ThumbCoast debuts are Matt Seely with Professor Marvel/The Wizard of Oz and Kaila Szafranski as the glittery Glinda/Aunt Em.
The cast also features a strong ensemble of adults and seasoned youth performers who play a variety of roles including Munchkins, Ozians, Trees, Jitterbugs, and Winkies. Additionally, cute pup, Beetlejuice, will play the role of Toto!
“ThumbCoast is proud to showcase youth on the mainstage. Most of these young actors have grown up taking our academy classes and now get to put their skills to good use in our biggest family friendly show of the season,” says Director/Choreographer Brittany Everitt Smith. Stephanie Graham Music Directs the production and Abbey Khuns showcases her expert media skills, immersing the audience in a 270 degree projection. The classic characters, costumes, fantastical colors, special effects (including a melting witch), and flying monkeys will surely intrigue the audience at any age!
The Wizard of Oz is produced in special arrangement with Concord Theatricals and runs March 23 – April 28 at The Boardwalk Theatre. Tickets are $38 and can be purchased at thumbcoasttheaters.com or by calling the box office at 810-278-1749.
