Living God’s Best: Learning from last generation’s great mistake

By Joseph Hayes

I left feeling like I had just had an epiphany.

One conversation, with one stranger — had just changed the course of my life.

We had just talked for an hour about her life and what she had learned from her days as a parent. She looked me in the eyes and told me how badly she had wanted to give her children a better life than what she had encountered.

How she had gone out of her way to make it easier on them. How now, she is forced to cover their overdraft fees, pay their cell phone bills and steadily cover for their mishaps because they never learned responsibility.

She held onto my arm and cried and told me how she regretted all of the things she had just freely given away without teaching them the proper value of hard work, because now her hard work wasn’t appreciated and they had become accustomed to taking her for granted.

As I was listening to her, the still, small, voice inside of me was speaking to me and I was engaging in a striking conversation with the Holy Spirit, that would forever change my perspective.

While she told me how she regretted all of the things she had given away without requiring accountability and responsibility, God reminded me of my childhood sports coaches and how they had always trained us harder than we had liked.

God reminded me that when you are attempting to bring the best out of someone, Love will cause you to be tougher on them, not easier on them; knowing that you are attempting to instill in them the ability to one day overcome a real challenge or battle.

When you simply give into someone or give someone something without causing them to strive or work for it, they are not ready for the challenge that will surely come from the devil.

Maybe that’s why when we cry out to God and ask Him why certain things have happened to us in life, we should understand that God is our Father and He’s training us up for something greater. That doesn’t always feel good. But we can trust the One that so loved us.

In our search to give our children a better life, we have often given them whatever they wanted, without teaching them the proper mechanics of hard work, dedication and maturation in the process. They have many more things, much greater technology and much more comfort on the surface.

But do they have more maturity? More accountability? Will they be able to hold onto the things we gave them?

So that has spawned what you now see, the degrading of our society.

Instead of simply giving this generation a better life, we should have trained them harder and taught them how to maintain a better life. So that the Blessings God had bestowed upon our country remained.

It surely would be attacked by the devil. But so many people simply want their children to have it easier, and as they age, they aren’t ready for real challenges.

Just look at our nation. Which aspect of it isn’t falling apart?

Look at the issues morally facing the country that weren’t even issues 50 years ago, 20 years ago, 10 years ago.

When Barack Obama was elected in 2008, he was voted in saying that he believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. Now he would be considered a bigot if he were to say the exact same thing.

That sort of evangelism the devil has pushed in the world to go against God in nearly every subject has left the world void of real understanding.

Consider how the same generation of people that banter openly with one another about things such as love, have no understanding of it. We have not been taught what it means at its root.

God is love.

So the same people who will focus on women rights, will in the next breath overlook the murder of female babies.
The Church in our nation has watched aimlessly and argued among itself. And our nation continues to receive a surprising lesson.

There are no easy ways out. The law of seed time and harvest really does reign supreme.

What we sow, we really will ultimately reap. Call it karma if you would like. The Bible says as long as the earth remains, whatever you put in, you will get out of a situation.

We now have a nation discussing handouts such as free college education for all. As if someone wouldn’t have to pay for it, and that would cause education to actually be valued by all.

We are talking about free health care for all, when life for all is not valued.

We clearly have not been taught properly, because the Church is supposed to be the teacher of society and it has not done its job.

By the time I walked into my home, I felt like I had a renewed focus on why my children need to do chores regularly. Why I needed to teach them how to manage money and to make purchases for themselves with their allowances.

How if they worked hard for something, they would be more inclined to take care of their belongings and if I started them on this sort of mindset at a young age they would grow up to become responsible, respectful adults.

I can see more than ever where we have missed it with the current generation. It’s a storyline that’s on the news every single day.

God is the leader of the earth and our only hope is in Jesus. If He is not being honored or followed in our nation, the only other option would be demise.

Slow, fast or steady. The choice is up to us. We must humble ourselves and turn from the foolish and prideful concepts that have led us to this point.

We are nothing without God and we are finding that out every single day.

To receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, believe and say out loud: Heavenly Father, I come to you in Jesus’ name. Please forgive me of my sins. I believe your Son Jesus was sent to earth to die for me on the cross and that he rose from the dead. I receive him as my Lord and Savior. Please take my life and use it for your glory. I choose to extend forgiveness to anyone who has sinned against me. Welcome to God’s family! Your spirit is born again!
