PORT HURON, MI – Lake Huron Medical Center (LHMC) has received the Level III trauma center designation from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. This designation means Lake Huron Medical Center will be able to treat patients with more serious, possibly life-threatening injuries.
“Achieving Level III trauma center status reinforces our promise to provide advanced medical and surgical care to those in our community,” said CEO Jay de los Reyes, Lake Huron Medical Center. “We have an exceptional team of emergency trained physicians, nurses and excellent surgeons to deliver this level of care to those that live and work in our area.”
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Level III trauma centers, through an organized trauma response, can provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, emergency operations and arrange for the transfer of the patient to a facility that can provide definitive trauma care that cannot be managed by the resources dedicated to Level III designation.

“Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recognizes this important achievement and the integral part Lake Huron Medical Center has in building a regionalized, coordinated and accountable trauma system in Michigan,” said Kathy Wahl, Director, Division of EMS and Trauma Bureau of EMS, Trauma Preparedness, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
In Michigan, the trauma center designation process is entirely voluntary on the part of the hospital. It is meant to identify those hospitals that make a commitment to provide a higher level of care for multiple injured patients and who welcome public acknowledgment of that capability.
Lake Huron Medical Center continues to raise the standards for healthcare in the Blue Water Area. In 2019, LHMC has received Leapfrog Group’s grade “A” in hospital safety, Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award, and is rated four stars by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
