In case you missed it in the final hectic days of August, the city of Port Huron has a new police chief.
Former assistant chief Brian Kerrigan was sworn in as police chief in the municipal office center Aug. 19. Three days later, the police department celebrated the retirement of Chief Joseph Platzer.
“We are excited to announce that Brian Kerrigan has been officially sworn in as the new Chief of Police this morning,” announced the department on Facebook. “The ceremony took place in front of a packed city council chambers, filled with family, friends, community members, city officials, and law enforcement colleagues. Chief Kerrigan brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our department, and we are confident he will serve our community with dedication and integrity. Please join us in welcoming him to his new role.”
City Manager James Freed announced Kerrigan’s promotion at a press conference Aug. 15. Kerrigan is the city’s 33rd chief of police.
“He has 24 years of law enforcement experience,” said Freed, as heard on Thumb Coast TV. “He’s run our major crimes units, our SRT teams. A remarkably qualified individual that is homegrown. He’s lived his entire life here in St. Clair County.”
Mayor Pro Tem Sherry Archibald said the city council and police department have had an excellent relationship and that Kerrigan will continue that work.
“I started out here as a cadet and at that time never expected to be in this position,” Kerrigan said at the press conference. He said he would maintain the high standards set by Chief Platzer.
“He’s the right person at the right time for the job,” Freed said.
Platzer’s retirement party was held at the Vintage Tavern. Platzer announced his retirement plans in May.
“Tonight marked a significant moment in the history of the Port Huron Police Department as we celebrated the retirement of Chief Joseph Platzer,” said the department in a late night post on Facebook Aug. 22. “After an extraordinary 36 years of dedicated service to our community, Chief Platzer took his final call during a heartfelt retirement party surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, and community members.
“Chief Platzer has been a pillar of strength and leadership, guiding our department with integrity and compassion. His commitment to public safety and his tireless efforts to build strong relationships within the community have left a lasting legacy.
“Throughout his career, Chief Platzer has been instrumental in implementing innovative policing strategies, enhancing community engagement, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. His dedication to fostering a culture of respect and collaboration within the department has inspired us all.
“As we bid farewell to Chief Platzer, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering service and leadership. We wish him a retirement filled with joy, relaxation, and new adventures.”
