(LAPEER COUNTY) – A 29-year old Huron County woman was killed in a head-on, two-vehicle crash in Lapeer County Friday morning.

Investigators say passing motorists reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the car after the crash with the driver, 29-year-old Megan Griffith from Ruth, trapped inside.

Police say a bystander was able to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher while an off-duty Lapeer County EMS Paramedic was able to free an unresponsive Griffith and start CPR.

An ambulance rushed Griffith to McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The 40-year-old man from Clifford who was driving the truck was not injured.

Police say neither alcohol nor drugs are contributing factors nor is excessive speed over the 55 MPH speed limit. M-53 was closed for about three hours Friday morning while crews investigated and cleared the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Lapeer County Sheriff Department.
