Getting to Know God

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

2 Peter 1:2

“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,”

Getting along with yourself is imperative to having confidence in your Christian walk. When I talk about getting along with yourself, I am talking about having the inner peace that you have done right to others. When God says, “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you…,” He is saying that you have a peace within that you have treated everyone right. However, this verse teaches that this will only happen “through the knowledge of God.”

In order to find the knowledge of God, God says that there are several things that you must add to your life. God says in verses 5-7, to “add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.” Each of these things are critical to gaining a knowledge of God. They are critical because God says in verse 8, “For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” You will notice that as these things abound, your knowledge of Christ becomes fruitful. Several things are revealed about how to get to know God.

First, getting to know God only happens when you grow. You will notice three words that God mentions in these verse: “add, multiplied, and abound.” God never expects the believer to stay in the same condition they are in today; He expects the believer to grow. You will never learn more about God by having a stagnant faith; you only learn about God by having a growing faith. You start by adding to your faith; then, at some point, you need to start multiplying what you know. As the actions of faith multiply in your life, you will abound in these things so that you can be a blessing to others.

Second, getting to know God is always found through serving Him. The more you add to your faith, the more you will get to know God. You don’t get to know God by sitting, but you get to know God by serving with Him. You don’t learn about people through passive communication, but you get to know about them through working with them. One of my assistant pastors is Bro. Sandy Harjo. I have known Bro. Harjo for many years, but I have really gotten to know him as I have served with Him as I pastor my great church. The more I serve with Him, the more good I find out about him. Likewise, the more you serve with Christ, the more you will learn about Him. The reason God tells you to add to your faith virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, and other things is because He knows you will learn how to add these graces to your life through serving with Him.

Third, getting to know God is always found as His grace overflows from you to others. God talks about these things abounding in you, which means they overflow from you to others. The more you add “these things” to your Christian walk, the more they will overflow so you can be a help to others. The more you overflow and help others, the more you learn about God because He continues to give you more.

My friend, if you truly want to get to know God, you must get busy serving Him by helping others. The peace you are seeking in life is only found when you walk with the Prince of Peace while you serve others with Him.
