Picking up some safety tips, including how to prevent accidents and injuries, plus fun interactive activities for kids will highlight Family Safety Day in Port Huron next week. Participation is free.
The first-ever Family Safety Day, sponsored by McLaren Port Huron in partnership with more than a dozen other area agencies, is set for Thursday, May 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the employee parking lot at McLaren Port Huron. The cross streets are Elk and 10th avenues and Lincoln and Kearney streets. Since the event is free pre-registration is not required the public is simply invited to show up and enjoy.
Kelly DiNardo, an RN and the community outreach specialist at McLaren Port Huron, said in the past they hosted a child fun and fitness festival inside the hospital but the pandemic put a halt to that annual event in 2020. She said that the festival normally welcomed 250 children plus adults which meant they had over 400 people on the premises on a Saturday morning.

Since this is a new event on a weekday, DiNardo said she’s not sure what to expect in terms of attendance but she’s hoping for a great turnout.
There will be a strong presence from local law enforcement including Port Huron Police, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, and officers from the Michigan State Police. Local fire departments, members of the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Department of Natural Resources will also be on hand to share information about their work.
DiNardo said they will bring along patrol cars, fire engines, EMS ambulances, and even some watercraft that families can see up close.
“We really want it to be interactive and engaging,” DiNardo said. “And we’ll have fun stations with games for the kids too.”
Other agencies will have stations set up across the parking lot handing out items that promote safety. Activities centered on car seat safety, helmet use, a demonstration for the JAWS of Life and a Smokehouse will be part of the fun.
In all, the event will have over 20 stations set up to welcome families and a pair of bicycles will be given away to two children who have the winning raffle tickets. Those tickets will be available on-site during the event.
Hosting the Family Safety Day provides a chance to not only promote safety for families in the community but it’s a great opportunity for McLaren Port Huron to partner with all the other local agencies to share that important safety information.
“We used to have an age range but we didn’t want to exclude anyone so we’re just making it a big family event for all,” DiNardo said.
Again, no pre-registration is required for the free event but for additional information call (810)
