For those of you who don’t know where to start in preparing for OLD MAN WINTER, here’s some help. Use the following as a checklist to ensure your house is ready for winter.
SITE
- Winterize pool
- Final trim on landscape
- Correct any trip and fall areas
- Seal driveway (asphalt)
- Rake leaves
- Cut branches away from the roof
- Cut overgrowth away from the house
- Fertilize grass
- Winterize sprinkler system
- Move firewood away from the house
EXTERIOR
- Seal basement windows
- Caulk windows
- Caulk doors
- Caulk hole/cracks
- Install extensions (and splash blocks) on downspouts
- Clean gutters
- Cover air-conditioning unit (top only)
- Clean debris of the roof
- Check roof condition
- Re-seal roof penetrations (vents, stacks, etc.)
- Check flashing around the chimney
- Install weather covers on electrical outlets
- Drain conventional hose faucets (and shut off within)
- Check lights for function
DOOR & WINDOWS
- Check door weather stripping
- Check all windows for proper seal and function
- Wash windows
INSULATION
- Insulate perimeter bond in the basement (top of foundation wall)
- Add attic insulation (70% of heat loss is up)
HEATING
- Install new furnace filter
- Buy extra filters
- Have furnace checked for proper function
- Install computerized thermostat
- Clean chimney’s as necessary (especially fireplace)
- Install chimney caps if necessary
- Adjust fireplace damper
VENTING
- Pull attic insulation away from soffit vents
- Open all attic vents
- Close all crawl space vents
- Seal crawl space hatch
- Check draw fans for function (bath, range, etc.)
CLEAN-UP
- Clean out the storage areas
- Clean out garage
- Clean and store patio furniture
- Rake flower beds
