The St. Clair Flats Range Front and Rear Lighthouses have a story longer than their name. Early mariners were forced to anchor in Anchor Bay and wait for daylight as they feared entering the St. Clair River from Lake St. Clair at night. In the 1870s a front tower and a rear tower were built but both deteriorated over the years. Restoration efforts have given new life to the front tower as it is once again an active aid to navigation. The lights are not accessible to the public but may be seen from S. Channel Drive on Harsen’s Island. They should be a part of your tour of the Lighthouses of the Thumb of Michigan!
