Blue Water Wolves ready to make run

By Joseph Hayes

It has already been an improbable run.

Unlikely because they are still playing at all when most teams are confined to the couch.

The Blue Water Wolves 10-and-under travel softball team are state champions and headed to the National Softball Association State Championships after advancing out of the state round two weeks ago.

The Wolves 10U team won the state round by going 4-0.

The team is comprised of 11 players from Port Huron, Marysville, Yale and Peck.

“This is the first year that all 11 girls have played together,” coach Mike McCormick said. “A couple of the girls were teammates last year and this is the first year for some of them playing at all.

“We started playing games at the end of 2019 and we had a couple of fall tournaments and a couple of indoor tournaments. Then the first half of our season was canceled due to the pandemic. Two weeks ago we were able to open back up with practices and social distancing and then we went over to Potterville near Lansing for the tournament.”

The Wolves won three of their four games by one run to advance out of the state round.

“It was pretty amazing,” Wolves pitcher Adeline Jones said. “It was a great experience. We won and it felt amazing. I was just like ‘Wow, we won state championships.’

“We were on defense and I was pitching. It’s pretty amazing and it’ll never forget it. I believe we just need to keep working and work harder. Keep at it. I think we will get even better.”

Up next is the NSA World Series held in Indiana. The Wolves will continue practicing with social distancing before leaving out for the tournament July 21-26.

“We have had a lot of practices with them,” Coach McCormick said. “We have done a lot of hitting and put in a lot of work. It was incredible to see them win that state title. It was pretty wild.”
