Jim Bloch recently took third place for criticism in the Detroit Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual Excellence in Journalism awards.
Bloch’s three award-winning pieces appeared in Blue Water Healthy Living.
SPJ announced the winner’s May 5 at its awards dinner held at the San Marino Club in Troy.

Bloch, who freelances for BWHL, titled his entry “Radicalism, Radio and the Stuff of Dreams.”
His stories included “Can instrumental jazz be political? Try Vijay Iyer’s ‘Children of Flint‘”; “Best new radio show of 2021: ‘The Don Was Motor City Playlist‘”; and “Remember the Main: Art cinema closes in Royal Oak“.
The criticism category is open to journalists working in all forms of media of any size.
Julie Hinds of the Detroit Free Press won first place for her cultural criticism. Melody Baetens of the Detroit News took second place for her restaurant reviews.
