Brings services directly to Michiganders in west and mid-Michigan

By Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson

During a press conference at the North American International Auto Show today, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced the launch of two additional mobile Secretary of State offices to serve west and mid-Michigan.

The mobile offices bring Secretary of State services to senior centers, foster-care facilities, rural areas and other communities with limited mobility and access to the internet. Benson launched the first mobile office in southeast Michigan last fall, where the state’s population is greatest. It has since served nearly 3,000 residents at 80 community-partnered events.

“Our mobile offices bring our services directly to people who need them right where they are,” said Benson. “Continuously increasing the convenience and efficiency of our services is another way we are making government work for all Michiganders across the state.”

In addition to mobile offices, Benson’s administration increased access to services by doubling the number available online and installing more than 160 self-service stations across the state. Most of the machines are located in grocery stores and open evenings and weekends.

Now 60 percent of all Secretary of State transactions are conducted without an office visit, up from just 28 percent in 2018.

Residents who do visit an office are in and out in an average of 20 minutes or less.

The new mobile offices travel to and then set up operations in the lobbies and shared spaces of community organizations. They can provide nearly all Secretary of State transactions except testing. Residents can apply for and renew their driver’s license and state ID, update their address, register to vote, transfer vehicle titles and more.

Benson has asked the state Legislature to provide funding to staff additional mobile offices to serve other regions of the state.

Organizations interested in partnering to bring a mobile office to their community are encouraged to fill out a request form at
