And Prayed

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

2 Kings 20:2

“Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying,”

The verse above was Hezekiah’s response when he heard that he was going to die. Hezekiah was very ill when Isaiah came to tell him to set his house in order because he was going to die. Hezekiah determined not to resign to the prophet’s words; instead, he knew the only way that he could turn this around was to go to God and ask for His healing. It was the fact that Hezekiah prayed that turned a deadly illness into a miraculous healing. Had he resigned to death he would have died, but he chose to go to prayer to get his circumstance to be turned from hopeless to miraculous. Let me give you several thoughts on what you should do when you face hopeless situations.

First, leave your problems and come to God. The only way to turn your situation from hopeless to miraculous is to turn your face from hopelessness and pray. You are going to face situations in your life that seem hopeless, but you don’t have to let hopelessness control your life. When hopelessness enters your life is the time you need to enter the prayer closet to get the omnipotent God to work in your situation.

Second, don’t resign to life’s problems. Hezekiah could have easily resigned to his illness, and if he did, he would have never seen God’s hand work the miraculous in his life. Many believers miss God’s miraculous hand because they resign to their problems. My friend, just because your problem seems hopeless doesn’t mean that you must resign to it. You will never know what God can do through your situation if you resign and stop fighting.

Third, leave your problems and come to God. Hezekiah “turned his face to the wall, and prayed.” If you want God to answer your prayers, you are going to have to turn from the world and get alone with God. You will never see God answer your prayers until you get away from everything to pray. One of the greatest problems the believer faces today is that they never get alone with God. If you want God to do something great in your life, you must turn the world off and get to God.

Fourth, when everything seems hopeless, pray. “And prayed” are the greatest two words in the verse above. When you hear the bad report from the doctor, turn your face to the wall and pray. When life suddenly turns for the worse, turn your face to the wall and pray. When finances flee and bills flood in, turn your face to the wall and pray. When the boss tells you that you can no longer work for him, turn your face to the wall and pray. When those you thought were your friends turn on you and attack you, turn your face to the wall and pray. No matter how hopeless your life may seem, there is always hope as long as you turn from your problems and pray.

Fifth, when it seems that nobody is listening, you can be assured that God always hears. God reminded Hezekiah in verse 5, “I have heard thy prayer…” My friend, God hears your prayer even when you don’t think He hears you. God hearing your prayer is not determined by whether you felt He heard you, but He heard your prayer because He promises to hear you.

Sixth, the prayer of tears always brings a harvest of joy. Psalm 126:5-6, should remind you that the tearful prayer always produces a joyful harvest. Tears in prayer are the language that God understands that moves Him to answer your prayer.
