Former Assistant Shasta County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Joanna Francescut appeared to have won the June 2 primary for a seat that would return her to the elections office as its head.
Candidates in the two county supervisor races for District 1 and District 5 wait to see whether anyone is declared a winner outright.
Francescut held a 16.1-percentage point lead over incumbent Clerk and Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis, with about 2,500 ballots left to count. More than 7,700 votes separated Francescut and Clinton.
In the three-way race for District 1, Redding Councilwoman Erin Resner maintained more than 54% of the vote against incumbent Supervisor Kevin Crye and political activist Richard Gallardo.
It’s unknown how many more ballots are left to count in each of the district races, but sustaining more than 50% of the vote, positions a candidate to win the race outright. If no one receives more than 50%, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff on Nov. 3. Whether there is a winner when the primary vote is certified in July or after the general election, the newly elected officials will take office in January 2027.
In the three-way race for District 5, Anderson Councilman Mike Gallagher led with about 49% voter support, followed by incumbent Supervisor and Board Chair Chris Kelstrom and, in third, political candidate Gary Oxley.
A total of 2,523 ballots remained to be counted in the election. Turnout in the June 2 primary stood at 45.41%, with 52,848 ballots cast so far. All told, the county had 116,380 registered voters.
The latest ballot figures show more votes were cast in this election than in 2022, when the county reported the ballots cast totaled 52,903 and registered voters numbered 112,358.
The Shasta County Elections Office is providing daily updates and will post its next report by 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9.
