BATTLE CREEK – Here is a list of the top performers in high school sports from the Battle Creek Enquirer-area for the week of May 18-24.
Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled courtesy of information provided to the Battle Creek Enquirer by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails or mentioning @bcesports in game results and highlights posted to Facebook.

Top Performances of the Week
Girls Soccer
Lola Saber helped the Marshall girls soccer team clinch the Interstate 8 Conference title after earning a tie with Harper Creek 1-1. With less than a minute on the clock in regulation, Saber scored the lone goal for the Redhawks in the game off pass from Nyla Whittaker. With the result, Marshall finished the league season at 5-0-1 for the outright title. If Marshall had lost, there would have been a three-way tie for first in the league with Harper Creek, Marshal and Parma Western.
Girls Soccer Districts
The Michigan High School Athletic Association girls soccer district tournament began this week as well. See results of local teams here.
Track
Harper Creek claimed the Interstate 8 Conference championship in boys track as the Beavers finished first at the league meet. The No. 2 state-ranked Harper Creek squad had 165.5 team points to outdistance second-place Parma Western with 130. ,
Harper Creek’s DJ Wood won the 100 meters (10.9), 110 hurdles (14.03), . Also for the Beavers, Josh Ilgenfritz won the 800 (1:58.4), Nolan Oaks won the long jump (21-2.5). Harper Creek took first in the 3,200 relay (8:19.19) with the team of Ilgenfritz, Logyn Katsarsky, Cooper Gardner, Christian Ayres).
Pennfield’s Terrence Grigsby won the 200 (24.11).
Marshall’s Zach Hudson won the 300 hurdles (40.4). The Redhawks also won the 400 relay (43.7) with the team of Hudson, Matthew Waito, Landon Patton and Haidyn Woods.
In the girls meet, Coldwater finished as league champs.
Harper Creek finished first in the 400 relay (51.7) with the team of Briston Latimer, Camille Robinson, Niatalia Hoyt, Jasmine McBride. The Beavers won the 800 relay (1:49.6) with the team of Latimer, Robinson, Hoyt and McBride.
Marshall freshman Emily Dietrich won the 300 hurdles (47.6). The Redhawks won the 1,600 relay (4:14.7) with the team of Ollie Rozell, Maura Young, Alaina Hoffman, Dietrich.
State Team Track Finals
The back-to-back state champs Harper Creek boys team came close to a third title after finishing second on the Michigan High School Track Coaches Association State Team Championships. Harper Creek had 1,418 team points to trail first-place Frankenmuth at 1,472 in Division 2.
“Our kids fought hard all the way to the end. We just came up a little short. I love this team and I love our coaches. I have heard people say it was a great run. Today was a little bump in the road. Harper Creek track isn’t going away,” Harper Creek boys track coach Larry Quick said.
