Gator encounter leads to closure of Pine Meadows Conservation Area

A peaceful day at the Pine Meadows Conservation Area took an unexpected turn on Monday when a large alligator attacked a cow, leading to the park’s indefinite closure.

Where is Pine Meadows?

The street address is 2280 Pine Meadows Golf Course Road, Eustis.

Did the alligator cause injury?

The encounter happened near the water’s edge, where the alligator reportedly attempted to drag the cow into the marsh.

While the animal was eventually freed, the injuries were so severe that law enforcement officers on the scene had to humanely euthanize it.

The good part

In a bittersweet silver lining, an uninjured calf was rescued from the site and safely transported to the Lake County Animal Shelter.

The hunt is on

As of this writing, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has not yet tracked down the gator.

While they haven’t caught it yet, traps have been set throughout the area.

Officials say the gates to the conservation area will stay locked until the alligator is successfully removed.

A warning about gator mating season

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this attack isn’t just a random occurrence — it’s a timely reminder that alligator mating season is officially here.

Courtship begins in April, with peak activity hitting in May and June, when gators become much more mobile, territorial and active.

“During this time, alligators are more active, making it especially important for residents and visitors to remain alert near water,” Lake County officials noted in an official statement.

Pine Meadows is closed … for now

“Out of an abundance of caution, Pine Meadows Conservation Area will remain closed until the alligator is located and removed,” said Lake County’s spokesperson Jeff Foley in a media release.

Foley said that the county will notify the public when the property reopens.
