Stockton sports roundup features spring break tournaments, perfect game

Welcome to The Record’s weekly roundup.

Every week, The Record will deliver a quick-hit look at the past week’s sports action — the big games, the best performances and the storylines worth knowing. Baseball, softball and track will anchor the coverage, with other spring sports joining the mix when they make noise.

Track season can be packed with meets, so each week, first-place finishers from at least one competition will be spotlighted.

Call it a digest. Call it a highlight reel. Either way, it’s the fastest way to keep up with San Joaquin County sports without following every score or reading every recap.

It may have been spring break, but there was no shortage of action. Multiple tournaments filled the schedule, creating a slate of intriguing nonleague games, along with a couple of key league matchups.

One team repeated as tournament champions, and just a week after a no-hitter, two pitchers delivered a one-hitter and a perfect game.

Boys volleyball is in the mix this week, too.

That said, welcome to the March 30-April 4 roundup.

Baseball

St. Mary’s 1, Saint Francis 0 (April 1)

Second game or not, this was the statement. At the Boras Classic in Sacramento, St. Mary’s picked up what may have been its biggest win of the tournament, taking down top-25 Saint Francis. Mississippi State commit Dax Hardcastle took over, tossing a complete-game shutout with 15 strikeouts and allowing just two hits.

St. Mary’s 12, West Park 0 (April 1)

Hours after one Division I commit took over, another stepped in and did the same. This time it was Cal State Northridge commit Giani Camacho, who threw a perfect game — no hits, no walks.

Manteca 4, Oakdale 0 (April 1)

That’s how a response looks. After a 13-2 loss two days earlier, Jeremy Cross delivered a near no-hitter — a complete game with seven strikeouts and just one hit allowed in the first inning. The performance evened the three-game series and sparked an 8-0 win April 3, leaving both teams tied for third in the VOL at 8-4.

Stagg 8, Bear Creek 3 (April 1)

Everything changed this week. Bear Creek went from a three-way tie for first in the SJAA with Tokay and Edison to playing catch-up after this loss and a 5-5 tie in nine innings two days later. Stagg, meanwhile, moves into a tie for third with Bear Creek.

St. Mary’s 8, Granite Bay 7 (April 2)

Back-to-back Boras Classic champions — and this is why. Down 6-2 entering the seventh, St. Mary’s rallied with four runs to tie it, then moved ahead in the eighth. In the ninth, Moses Alexander delivered the walk-off bunt.

Ripon Christian 4, Ripon 3 (April 2)

This cross-the-street rivalry once again lived up to the billing. Less than 24 hours after a 5-4 win, Ripon Christian had to do it differently. Down 1-0 in the sixth, it put up three runs, gave up the tie in the seventh, then ended it with a walk-off.

Softball

Kimball 10, Lodi 2 (March 31)

This is what a top-three county team looks like. Lodi came in with just one TCAL loss — to Tracy — and holding second. Emma Coronado changed that fast — 3-for-3, a single, double and triple, and six RBIs.

Tracy 8, Liberty 7 (April 1)

It was something new for Tracy. The only time it had trailed all season ended in a mercy-rule win. This time, it was a battle. A 3-0 lead turned into a 4-3 deficit, then 6-5, before Tracy regained a 7-6 edge. Tied 7-7 in the seventh, Hayden Fell ended it with a home run to center field.

Linden 4, St. Mary’s 3 (April 4)

First Tokay. Then Lincoln. Now St. Mary’s. At the Yoneda Classic Tournament, Linden kept stacking wins, showing why it has consistently reached at least 15 victories in 15 of the past 20 seasons, even as a small-town program.

Manteca 9, Douglas(NV) 4 (April 4)

Spring break meant a trip to Sparks, Nevada, and a strong showing. Manteca went 3-2 at the Reed Spring Break Softball Tournament in Sparks, Nevada, beating top-50 North Valleys 13-3 and top-30 Douglas 9-4. Maleiah Garza fueled the Douglas win, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. The only losses came against top-seven teams in Nevada.

Boys Volleyball

Bear Creek 3, McNair 0 (March 30)

Tied for second no more. Bear Creek moves to 8-1 and sits one game behind Edison, while McNair drops to 6-3 after a loss to Tokay two days later.

Livingston 3, Lathrop 1 (April 1)

Beating the best is required to take the next step. Lathrop had its chances, dropping two sets by just two points, but couldn’t overcome first-place Livingston in the WAC.
