Who's running in May 2026 Lubbock city council election? See the list

Lubbock’s May municipal elections are on the horizon, with positions for mayor and city council on the ballot.

Here’s a look at what positions are up for election and who’s running.

Lubbock City Council May 2026 elections

There are four seats up for election — mayor, District 1, District 3 and District 5.

The mayor of Lubbock is elected every two years and council members are elected in staggered terms every four years.

Lubbock mayoral election

Incumbent Mayor Mark McBrayer is set to face three contenders for re-election to his seat. He was first elected as Mayor in 2024. He’s an ordained minister and local lawyer who previously served two years as councilman representing District 3.

His challengers are:

City Council District 1 election

Incumbent councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Christy Martinez-Garcia is set to face one challenger in her race. Martinez-Garcia was first elected to her seat in 2022 and is the publisher and editor of Latino Lubbock Magazine.

She is set to face Pat Kelly. a 30-year veteran of the Lubbock Police Department and owner of Pat Kelly Construction. This is a rematch for the seat, as Kelly ran against Martinez-Garcia in 2022.

City Council District 3 election

Incumbent David Glasheen announced a few months ago that he would not be seeking re-election, leaving his seat open. There are three candidates who filed:

City Council District 5 election

Election Day for Councilwoman Jennifer Wilson is all but a formality for her campaign as she is running unopposed. Wilson, a local pediatrician, was first elected to her seat in 2022.

When are Lubbock municipal, school board elections in May?

Election day is Tuesday, May 2, 2026, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s website. Early voting begins Monday, April 20, 2026 and lasts until Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

Should a runoff be needed for any race, it will be held in June.

How can I check to see if I am a registered voter in Texas?

Visit the Texas Secretary of State website — teamrv-mvp.sos.texas.gov/MVP/mvp.do — to double-check.
