Steelworkers Local 3057 remain on picket line after slight movement

SHELBY ― Steelworkers Local 3057 on March 3 took to ArcelorMittal a pre-ratified proposal that accommodated their spousal concerns in an attempt to resolve the strike.

“The company countered the proposal with more health care changes, and withholding prior agreements unless the union agreed to their ‘alternative work schedule,'” according to Steve Ackerman, international representative for Local 3057.

“USW Local 3057 held a vote for the membership to decide, which was voted down overwhelmingly on March 7,” Ackerman said.

“The United Steelworkers still remain committed to reaching a fair contract for both parties that our members can be proud to ratify,” he said.

“Friday, March 13, will mark two months Local 3057 has been on strike,” Ackerman said. “On behalf of Local 3057, the community outreach could not be more appreciated. From the local businesses with ‘We support Union Steelworkers USW’ signs, the donations and people stopping by the union hall and picket lines just to say hello. That is what keeps the local union thriving in this unfortunate situation.”

No talks have been held or scheduled between ArcelorMittal and the union since the strike began Jan. 13. About 450 people work at the steel plant.

Shoemaker is calling upon all “Brothers and Sisters of United Steelworkers Local Union #3057” to participate in a Solidarity March on Friday, March 13.

“We will mark two months on the picket line with a Solidarity March,” Shoemaker said. The march will begin at the Union Hall, 30 Mohican St., at 11 a.m. and will end at the picket line in front of ArcelorMittal at 132 W. Main St.

“Tim Burga, president of the Ohio AFL-CIO, will be joining us, along with other labor supporters to stand with our membership during this important moment,” Shoemaker said.

“The solidarity march route is less than one mile and will cross the overpass, which is the only hill along the route. If you are unable to participate in the walk, please feel free to join us at the picket line and show your support there,” he said. “Let’s continue to stand strong and show our solidarity.”
