The Ames-based thrift store will open its third location at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, at 4723 Lincoln Way. The grand With 8,500 square feet of floor space, Overflow Thrift will feature a large variety of clothing, furniture, home goods, collectibles and other thrifting treasures.

Overflow renovated one of two buildings formerly occupied by JAX Outdoor, which closed in August after 70 years in Ames.

“This new store will expand thrifting opportunities for Overflow customers and donors from central and west Ames and Boone County,” said Sandy Swanson, Overflow’s managing director.

Donations are being accepted at the west Ames spot, which joins Overflow’s other sites at 202 S. Duff Ave. and 919 E. Lincoln Way. All three locations will have the same hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Overflow donates to several noble causes in Story County

Overflow Thrift invests in the community by recycling and reselling affordable goods.

It also flows money back into good causes, locally and globally.

Since 2014, Overflow has given more than $1.1 million to organizations serving Iowa and across the world.

This year alone, Overflow Thrift will give more than $320,000 to over 25 organizations, including YSS, The Bridge Home, Martha’s House of Hope, The Romero House, Boys & Girls Club of Story County and UCI Haiti, and many others.

Overflow also aids community health by reselling or recycling more than 750,000 pounds of material each year, keeping the items out of landfills and garbage cans.

Overflow is partnering with Friendship Ark, Arc of Story Co. for new endeavor

Overflow has joined forces with Friendship Ark and The Arc of Story County to help establish its west Ames campus.

Friendship Ark and The Arc of Story County are renovating a second building on the west side of the former JAX property for their administrative and programming offices.

The facility will be fully accessible and provide spaces for client enrichment, such as an interior reflection garden. The campus will also include a new gymnasium space for use by Special Olympics athletes, Friendship Ark’s core members, and other Ames community members.

The partnership between Overflow, Friendship Ark and the Arc of Story County represents an ongoing commitment to their clients and the many nonprofit organizations providing critical services in the Ames community, Swanson said.

The partnership allows for expanded services, greater volunteer involvement, and a better ability to financially support area ministries.
