Town offices will be open, as will town-operated recreation facilities and the Town Marina. The tennis courts at Phipps Ocean Park remain closed for the park’s ongoing $31 million redevelopment project.

Post offices, as well as county government offices, will be closed. There will be no regular residential or business mail deliveries.

Schools will be open, and garbage and trash collection schedules will not change. Lifeguards will staff town beaches.

All Society of the Four Arts buildings and libraries will be closed, but the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden and the Four Arts Demonstration Garden will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Columbus Day, celebrated on the second Monday in October, has been a federal holiday since 1892.

In response to longstanding criticism of Christopher Columbus’ actions toward Native Americans, former President Joe Biden in 2021 issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day, observed the same day as Columbus Day. Although not a federal holiday, it is recognized in several cities and states.
