One person is dead following a three-car crash on Interstate 81 in the City of Binghamton.
At around 11:05 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and EMS responded to the crash at the Exit 12 off-ramp on I-81, the sheriff’s office said.
At the scene, deputies discovered a U-Haul truck on fire with the driver trapped inside. After deputies and New York State Department of Transportation members extinguished the flames, the driver was removed from the vehicle and transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center, where the driver was pronounced dead at around 12:40 p.m.
The sheriff’s office’s initial investigation determined the U-Haul truck, which was towing a vehicle, had been struck by an SUV while attempting to take the Exit 12 off-ramp.
After merging southbound onto I-81 from state Route 17 eastbound, the sheriff’s office said the U-Haul truck began approaching the Exit 12 off-ramp. At the same time, a red SUV traveling in the same direction attempted to merge across several lanes in order to take the same exit.
The red SUV subsequently hit the U-Haul truck, causing the driver to then collide with a NYSDOT attenuator truck.
The crash remains under investigation by the Broome County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Unit. The identity of the deceased driver will be released after the family is notified.
