Matthew Stafford cracked the perfect joke to open his 1st press conference since June

For the first time in more than two months, Matthew Stafford took the podium and addressed reporters with a press conference on Thursday. Typically, he’d be doing that every week during training camp and the regular season, but the Los Angeles Rams hadn’t made him available to the media because of his ongoing back issue that had sidelined him from practice for nearly four weeks.

Obviously, everyone was waiting to ask Stafford about his back, and he had the perfect joke before fielding any questions.

“You guys all want to talk about this paper cut I got last night opening some mail? That’s what I figured. Fire away,” he deadpanned.

One reporter obliged, asking him about said paper cut.

“Oh, good,” Stafford said, seemingly surprised that someone actually asked him about his cut. “Yeah, we glued it up. It felt great. Spun it around pretty good. Thanks for asking.”

It’s good to see Stafford still has his sense of humor after all the frustration that’s come from this back injury, keeping things light in his first press conference since minicamp on June 18.

Of course, he was asked about his back and addressed it at length, shedding some light on how he’s feeling with the season approaching. Things are trending up for Stafford and the Rams after the veteran quarterback managed to practice four days in a row this week, so he’s in good shape heading into Week 1.
