Head coach Liam Coen hasn’t confirmed whether or not the Jacksonville Jaguars’ starters will play in the second preseason game against New Orleans, but quarterback Trevor Lawrence is preparing to take the field on Sunday.
“It’s always a varied number of snaps, you don’t know exactly what it’s going to be, but expecting to play,” Lawrence said after Thursday’s practice. “I’m not sure if the result of today’s practice would or wouldn’t have changed that. I don’t know as far as what coach is thinking, but I’m prepared to play. From what’s communicated to us, we’re prepared to go and play a little bit.”
There are practice reps and then there are in-game reps–the latter of which can be much more valuable from an evaluation standpoint and also as a measuring stick to see where the team is truly at.
For a Jaguars team that is implementing a new scheme on both sides of the ball, those in-game reps are extremely valuable.
The Jaguars held a scrimmage during Thursday’s practice, and from the sounds of it, it was a rough showing. Mia O’Brien wrote in her camp takeaways post that the coaches made the players run sprints after the practice.
Penalties on the offensive line and dropped passes by the pass catchers were two of the issues.
So if anything, following that performance, Coen may be more likely to play the starters this week in an effort to correct what went wrong.
“It’s just another opportunity for us to get better,” Lawrence said of playing on Sunday. “You gotta take it for what it is and learn from it and watch the tape. You can’t be doom-and-gloom come game time because you had a rough practice. You have to be able to bounce back. We do have to clean the stuff up. Some of the stuff showed up all camp, so we gotta be deliberate in what we do to change it. You gotta do something different in order to get different results.”
