Texas Democrats show moral courage by breaking quorum

In Texas, we may not agree on everything, but in El Paso we should all agree that every voter deserves a fair voice in choosing their representatives. Democracy only works when it’s fair, and that means standing against gerrymandering— no matter who is in power.

That’s why I support the Texas Democrats who broke quorum. Their decision wasn’t about party politics. It was about principle. It took moral courage to walk out, but they did it to protect the rights of everyday Texans.

Gov. Greg Abbott and his allies didn’t focus on property tax relief, flood protection, or addressing the animal welfare crisis. Instead, they pushed a Trump-inspired redistricting plan that flips five congressional districts without cause.

These maps silence voters, deepen political extremism, and push working-class voices even further to the margins.

In El Paso, we’re tired of being ignored by state leadership. We’ve asked for real solutions and accountability, but Austin keeps choosing power over people.

Breaking quorum was not obstruction. It was a stand against corruption. And for once, our representatives listened. Texas Democrats showed they are the party of common sense, working families, and democratic values.

Texans deserve leaders who fight for us — not just the wealthy and well-connected. In this state, democracy should belong to all of us. Not just the few.

Why the Deck Plaza is good for El Paso

As an outdoor and family enthusiast, I love exploring El Paso with my family — whether it’s walking, running, hiking, or simply enjoying our beautiful city. This summer, I organized a series of five 5K runs that highlighted our local parks. For us, parks aren’t just recreational spaces — they’re essential to our quality of life. They support our health, strengthen community bonds, and contribute to our local economy.

The proposed Downtown Deck Plaza has the potential to do all of that and more. By transforming a stretch of I-10 into a vibrant urban park, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reconnect our city and create a welcoming public space in the heart of Downtown El Paso

With thoughtful design, this space could include an amphitheater, gardens, walking paths, dog parks, playgrounds, and retail areas — features that serve a wide range of residents and visitors alike.

The Deck Plaza can become a true hub — a place where El Pasoans from all walks of life come together to celebrate our city. That’s the future I want to see — not just for my own family, but for every family in El Paso.
