Based on how the offseason unfolded, we recently projected what the Jacksonville Jaguars’ starting defense will look like this season. So now, let’s take a look at what grades those players received from Pro Football Focus for their performances.
To take a position-by-position look at why I think each of these players will be among the starters come Week 1 for the Jaguars, you can find that reasoning here.
We saw GM James Gladstone make some additions this offseason on defense, specifically in the secondary with him signing Eric Murray and Jourdan Lewis, along with drafting Travis Hunter.
But also a big part of getting improved play out of the Jaguars’ defense this season will be the addition of defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, who brings a malleable defensive scheme that will adjust weekly and on the fly to what the opponent is doing, and mold to the skill sets that are already on the roster.
“I love Coach Camp,” said Josh Hines-Allen. “He’s somebody that you want to play for.” … “This dude is intense but he shows the passion and love that he has for the game and for us. It makes us want to play for him. It makes us want to understand the defense a little bit faster for him. So that’s always a good trait to have in a coach.
“So that’s what I’m saying, I think we’re in a good position. I’m ready to maximize the value I can bring to this defense and just be the best defensive player I can be.”
When it comes to PFF’s grading system, this scale will help provide some context behind the numbers. As always, while this grading scale is helpful, it’s not he be-all end-all when it comes to player evaluations.
