Hernandez fights proposed ‘kayak tax’
“I hope we sent a strong message today…no new kayak tax”
Lansing – State Representative Shane Hernandez (R-Port Huron) voted for a resolution today opposing the Michigan State Waterways Commission’s proposed “kayak tax,” which would require all kayaks, canoes and paddle boards to be registered with the state.
Hernandez said people should not be penalized for supporting the state’s tourism industry, especially considering participation in paddle sports increases at a rate of 7 percent each year in Michigan.
“I refuse to accept a proposal that will deter people from joining in on this growing pastime that is so great for Michigan’s economy,” said Hernandez, of Port Huron. “With watersports being such an important part of the tourism and recreation industries in the 83rd district, I’m proud to support today’s resolution. I hope we sent a strong message to the Waterways Commission – no new kayak tax.”
The House approved the resolutions with overwhelming, bipartisan support.
Blue Water Healthy Living wants to know what you think!
- Food for thought: With Michigan being surrounded by water in addition to the many waterways throughout the state, does it make sense to limit, (by taxing) the activities people use them for? Or would it limit usage?
- How about visitors to our state, should we charge for them using our waterways the same way we charge residents?
