Great Equalizers

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

Proverbs 22:2

“The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.”

Life can seem unfair to many, especially to those who seem to be poor. Many believe that if you have the right connections or possess riches that you can get further in life than those who have no connections and those who are poor. Sadly, to some extent this is true; however, God makes it clear that there are some things that are great equalizers. He says, “The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.” In other words, the LORD has allowed some things to be the equalizer between the rich and the poor. Let me show you several things this chapter reveals that equalizes the playing field between the rich and the poor.

A good name is the first great equalizer. Verse 1 says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” Money can’t purchase a good name; rather, a good name is earned by paying your bills and keeping your word. All the money in the world can’t repair broken promises or a crushed heart. Having the trust of people is only achieved by doing what you say you will do and being there for people when they need you to be there.

Prudence is the second great equalizer. Verse 3 says, “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Being prudent is taking care of your future. In other words, living with tomorrow in mind equalizes the playing field between the rich and the poor. Many rich people live for today, but ruin their name for tomorrow. Prudence causes a person to set aside their feelings so they can look at tomorrow’s consequences. Tomorrow will come, and you can enjoy the blessings of tomorrow if you are prudent in all of your decisions.

Discernment is the third great equalizer. Prudence looks to tomorrow’s consequences of today’s actions; whereas, discernment sees where today’s actions take you tomorrow. Prudence is important, but without discernment, you won’t avoid the wrong friends and trends that will take you to the wrong places tomorrow. My friend, having the discernment to know the direction that a trend, person or movement will take you is vitally important to your life and staying faithful to the LORD.

Humility is the fourth great equalizer. Verse 4 says, “By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.” The ability to live a humble life is what gives you the ability to enjoy life tomorrow. Too many people waste everything on today’s pleasures which robs them of tomorrow’s wealth. I would much rather live humbly today so I can live in comfort tomorrow rather than living in luxury today and living in poverty tomorrow. Don’t worry about all the luxuries that others waste their money on today because the ability to live a humble life will allow you to have the pleasures you desire today tomorrow.

The fear of the LORD is the fifth great equalizer. Fearing the LORD will cause you to obey His commandments and avoid the heartache of sin’s consequences. It doesn’t matter how much money you have when sin’s payday comes to collect. The believer who has a fear of God is always cautious about private actions. My friend, money can’t buy joy and happiness; that is only achieved by doing right. Doing right is the greatest investment in tomorrow’s joy.

Pastor Allen Domelle was raised in a preacher’s home. At a young 5 years of age he was saved. Later, at the age of 13, he surrendered his life to full-time Christian service. By the time he was 15 years of age, a position opened up in his church that allowed him to start preaching every week. After graduating from high school, he went to Hyles-Anderson College where he graduated. He later received an honorary doctorate from the Bethel Baptist College in Jacksonville, Arkansas.
Bro. Domelle started traveling as a full-time evangelist in 1990. Throughout the years of being an evangelist, God allowed him to preach in 49 of the 50 states and several foreign countries, see thousands of people saved, and thousands of decisions made by believers in those meetings.
On April 15, 2018, Bro. Domelle took the pastorate at Maranatha Baptist Church in Bethany, Oklahoma. He continues to travel and hold meetings while pastoring a growing church. Bro. Domelle also co-founded the Old Paths Conference which is a Baptist conference that strongly promotes the old-time ways. He has authored several books, and is the founder and editor of the Old Paths Journal.
Bro. Domelle believes that it is everyone’s responsibility to win people to Christ. He personally wins many people to Christ each year. He has also seen several men saved under his ministry who have been called to preach and are now pastoring here in the States or serving as missionaries on foreign fields.
Bro. Domelle and his wife, Sandy, have been happily married since 1994. They have one daughter, Caitlyn.
