If you haven’t visited downtown Port Huron and stopped in to Kate’s Downtown for a specialty drink and a bite to eat, then you have yet to experience the best that the Blue Water Area has to offer.  Owner Kate Voss enhances the experience of traditional dining by supplying the freshest local ingredients possible, and imparting a friendly greeting to every customer as if they were friend or family. Kate’s heart is sincerely for downtown Port Huron and the people who gather at her cafe. “I started working at a coffee shop in college, and I realized that meeting great people all day long was what I was supposed to do. I liked interacting and meeting new people, and half of them became my friends, so it was more about that than actually making coffee.”

Kate’s Downtown, located at 231 Huron Avenue, boasts a unique menu of salads, sandwiches, soups, and baked goods. Gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options are available everyday, along with a specialty drink menu that’s out of this world! Situated two doors down from Sperry’s in the heart of downtown Port Huron, Kate’s offers a cozy atmosphere with a personal touch. Enjoy free Wi-Fi and a seat at a table adorned with fresh flowers, and you’ve got yourself some personal office time … or simply, a time to relax and refresh with good food and friendly people.  Kate’s is also the perfect place to meet friends and co-workers for lunch. You can eat-in or get your food and beverages to-go … and coming this Summer, you may even be able to get your meal delivered right to your doorstep!

Voss explained how her dream of owning a cafe in downtown Port Huron finally came into existence. “A cafe was already here prior to mine, so it was kind of a turn-key situation. I didn’t have the funds to start from scratch, so I basically did an equipment rental with the prior cafe. It was such a beautiful space that I didn’t have to do anything to, and I always wanted to be downtown, so it’s a perfect fit for me.” Kate has put her creative touch into everything the cafe has to offer … from the decor to the menu names and recipes to the special events hosted at the cafe to the finishing touches that make her cafe so warm and inviting.

Welcome to Kate’s!

“Helping in the revitalization of downtown … we’ve come a long way in the last five years. Now, we (downtown stores) can pretty much accommodate any needs that you have, whether it’s buying jewelry or getting a picture framed, to signing your kids up for gymnastics to seeing a film. We can accommodate all of those needs now, where five years ago, that was still not completely happening … but it is now, and way more than that!” Kate also discussed how using local, fresh, primarily organic products is important to her and her customers. “With our ingredients, we try to stay as locally sourced as we can. We make everything in-house, which is very nice. So many people have dietary restrictions now, so we can tell them what is in everything they are eating, and we can accommodate those dietary needs. If you are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan … any of those … we are the place for you to eat.”
