2 Kings 9:22
“And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?”
Joram, the son of Ahab, was king over Israel. He was a sinful and evil king just like his father. God’s judgment had been pronounced, and the person whom God would use to carry out this judgment was Jehu. Jehu gathered an army of men to go to Jezreel to destroy the house of Ahab. As the army approached the city, a watchman cried out to warn the king of the approaching army. Joram quickly sent a messenger to the approaching army to ask him, “Is it peace?” When that messenger didn’t return, he sent another one who didn’t return. Finally, Joram got in his chariot to see why this army was approaching so quickly, and when he saw Jehu he asked, “Is it peace, Jehu?” Of course, Jehu quickly pursued Joram and had him killed.
Four times the phrase is asked, “Is it peace?” Joram’s biggest problem was that he was for peace when he should have been for truth. He was more interested in getting along with everyone instead of making sure truth and righteousness were followed. On the other hand, Jehu answered Joram by saying, “What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?”Jehu was pointing out that there can be no peace when truth is attacked. Several lessons can be observed from this story.
First, lovers of peace who desire peace at all costs will compromise truth just to have peace. All it takes for truth to be silenced is for people to love peace more than they love truth. I certainly want peace, but I desire truth more than I desire peace. My friend, you must realize that compromise is the only choice when you are more interested in getting along with everyone because everyone won’t embrace truth.
Second, a love for truth will cause you to fight undesirable battles because truth is under attack. Battles are never pleasant, but they must be fought if truth is to prevail. Something ought to burn in your heart when you see truth attacked. I have heard many people talk bravely about their love for truth who cowered from the battle when truth was attacked. I am not saying that you should look for battles, but you are going to find that battles are a part of the life of the individual who has a deep love for truth.
Third, truth will always be under attack because Satan is at work; therefore, there will always be battles you must fight. Unfortunately, Satan often uses good men to accomplish his work, and though these men may be good men in society, they are not holding up truth and will be found on the other side of the battlefront. Many of the battles you will fight will be against people who once used to be on the same side holding the torch of truth. Most of your battles will not be against people you don’t know, but they will be against people you know and love; this is what makes these battles so hard to fight.
Let me ask you; do you love truth more than peace? Your love for truth is revealed by what you are willing to do when truth is attacked by those with whom you once stood with in the battle for truth. My friend, if you embrace peace over truth, you will lose your children to the world. If you love your children and truth, you will have a zeal like Jehu that makes you fight for truth even if it makes you unpopular.
