When you come to Knowlton’s Ice Museum of North America you will learn about Port Huron’s involvement in the ice harvesting industry plus much, much more!
Ice harvesting was a dangerous, labor intensive way of life – we offer a wonderful video explaining all aspects of the ice industry, from how sources of water were utilized, ice was cut and harvested- to how important it was to people living at that time who used ice for food preservation. We have tools displayed to see how they accomplished this job. There is even a small “hands-on” display for older students to try for themselves.
We ask schools to bring in students for a tour to learn about this part of our local history. Call (810) 987-5441, leave your contact information and we will get back with you to schedule your tour. We will need an hour or two for you to learn our shared history, see examples of how ice was harvested and used. One thing’s for sure – “you won’t be disappointed”.
I have been the manager of Knowlton’s Ice Museum for almost three years. I have lived in Port Huron all of my life and grew up with the Knowlton family. I have two adult children and two grandchildren. I belong to an antique tractor club in Croswell, MI where I’ve shown my 1949 8n Ford tractor in local parades. I love visiting the St. Clair river with my little dog and a good book for the afternoon. Quilting is a passion when I have them time. I truly enjoy sharing the ice harvesting history in our area; it brings back memories for so many people.
