Alkaline water. What is it?  If you are a bit like me, my first thought when I heard the term “alkaline water” was that it sounded hokey and confusing, battery-related, or a quick-lived fad that would be a waste of money. Those were my initial thoughts, and boy was I wrong.

Alkaline water doesn’t appear to be going away … in fact, Dr. Oz has been in favor of the concept for years. This water seems to be the talk of the town. But why? What makes it better than free tap water? Although my first recommendation would be for you to do some research of your own, I do have to say that the research I found provided some positive results to say the least. Some of the positives mentioned were that alkaline water neutralizes acid in your bloodstream, boosts your metabolism and helps your body absorb nutrients more effectively. It may even help prevent some diseases and slow the aging process. Alkaline water can be a powerful antioxidant with electrons that can help rid the body of free radicals, balance the ph levels in our blood, add extra hydration, and help with acid reflux.

My mom has been drinking alkaline water for the past ten years. She has always tried to get me to learn about it and consume it regularly for optimum health.  I ended up doing a little research on alkaline water, and these were the questions that were prevalent among skeptics:

  1. How does water become more alkaline?
  2. Does alkaline water treat and/or prevent cancer?
  3. How does alkaline water taste?
  4. Is well water the same as alkaline water?
  5. Where do I find alkaline water?

1. How does water become more alkaline?

Each company that sells alkaline water has a certain way of processing the water to make it more alkaline. For example, “Essentia,” a popular brand that sells alkaline water in many grocery stores, has a special process that they reveal in detail on their website. In my opinion, this water is the best tasting and the most thirst quenching. I cannot say enough good things about Essentia!

The alkaline level of our blood should be at a normal range of 7.35-7.45. If it is abnormally high or low, your first clue is passing out. Check out other symptoms of high alkalinity in the blood. You definitely don’t want to have your ph too high. But since people in America tend to have a more acidic diet on a day-to-day basis, it is an assumption that people would be dealing with high acid/low alkaline issues versus the opposite. Every person if different, so be sure to keep an eye on your response to alkaline water if you start drinking it.

2. Does alkaline water treat and/or prevent cancer?

This answer varies from person to person. Our cells are dependent on the cleanliness and proper pH of our internal fluids in order to be healthy. But in modern society, we consume so many acidic, processed foods and beverages that tax our bodies, making our internal environment too acidic.” ting the acid-base balance by adding some alkaline water.

3. How does alkaline water taste?

There are a handful of companies who produce and sell alkaline water. The best idea would be to purchase a bottle from each company, and choose the one that tastes the best to you.

4. Is well water the same as alkaline water?

Well water is more alkaline, yes. The only difference between alkaline water and well water is the taste.  Alkaline water, especially Essentia, goes the extra mile to be sure you enjoy the water you are drinking.

5. Where do I find alkaline water?

Alkaline water is sold in local grocery stores in the bottled water section. Local health food stores, like Nature’s Living Bounty on Holland Ave., also sell alkaline water for a fair price. Keep an eye out for sales, too. Meijer just had Essentia 1 liter bottles on sale for $1.69 a piece. Their regular price is $2.29 for the 1 liter bottle.

“Our cells are dependent on the cleanliness and proper pH of our internal fluids to be healthy… However, in today’s society, we consume so many acidic, processed foods and beverages that tax our bodies, giving us an over-acidic internal environment.” The solution? Righting the acid-base balance by adding some alkaline water.

It’s what we take out, not what we put in. Essentia achieves alkalinity through our ionization process by removing acidic ions (no more wondering how we achieve our clean, smooth taste). Most alkaline waters achieve alkalinity by adding minerals. These alkaline minerals were either added by nature or as part of the bottling process.

Since the stomach needs to be acidic to digest the food we eat, it’s important to drink alkaline water either 30 minutes before or up to two hours after meals.
